A highly contagious virus, mpox, has once again spread across Europe. However, what is more concerning is that a new strain identified as Clade Ib has shaken the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

Importance Of Lifestyle Planning

As part of responsible global mobility, the health agency urges travellers and socially active people to review their vaccination status and also integrate health checks into their travel routines.

Although the infection is mostly mild, the UK health agency reports that local transmission of the mpox Clad Ib in countries such as Portugal, Italy and the Netherlands is steadily increasing.

UKHSA conveys that it is crucial to make a lifestyle plan for international travel, as nightlife and events are returning to pre-pandemic levels.

Travel And Health Tips

For travellers embarking on a journey to Europe, the UK health agency recommends treating ‘vaccine check’, adequate rest, balanced nutrition and maintaining immunity as a traveller’s toolkit.

Despite its ongoing research, the UKHSA further reports that vaccines released earlier for the treatment of mpox strains can provide 75 per cent to 80 per cent protection from the Clade Ib variant. Travel enthusiasts are also advised to stay vigilant, particularly during large gatherings or when visiting high-density urban regions.

Europe is making a continuous effort to tackle the increasing community transmission of mpox. Therefore, if anyone is planning a trip to this continent, they must treat “Health Preparedness” as part of their itinerary, besides passport, visa, accommodation, and insurance.

What Is Mpox?

Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is a highly contagious disease that can spread from person to person caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV). This viral disease can result in painful rash, fever, headache, enlarged lymph node, fatigue, muscle and back pain, but most people fully recover from the disease. There are two types of mpox: Clade I and Clade II. Currently, scientists have confirmed new sub-variants of both types, such as Clade Ia and Clade Ib, and Clade IIa and Clade IIb.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) mpox clade IIb outbreak occurred in the year 2020 and spread across African countries. Meanwhile, there are also growing outbreaks of the subvariant of Clade Ia and Clade Ib in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and parts of Africa. The global health organisation states that as of August 2024, the Clade Ib variants have spread beyond Africa.

Mpox Treatment

The best way to prevent mpox is by getting vaccinated, which works against the MPVX virus. Although the WHO recommends the vaccine to individuals who are highly at risk of contracting mpox, such as healthcare workers, individuals living with infected people, having multiple sex partners, and sex workers of any gender. Other common practices one should follow to protect themselves from mpox are staying hygienic. Hence, do not forget to wash your hands with soap and also disinfect contaminated surfaces.
