Tips to Prevent Pneumonia While Travelling

To prevent pneumonia while travelling, it is essential to take proactive measures to smooth a trip. Some of the guidelines mentioned by the World Health Organisation (WHO) are mentioned below.

  • Avoid Close Contact: Steer clear of individuals showing symptoms of acute respiratory infections.
  • Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently, particularly after contact with sick individuals or their surroundings.
  • Limit Animal Contact: Avoid close interactions with live or dead farm or wild animals.
  • Cough Etiquette: If you exhibit symptoms, maintain distance from others, cover your coughs and sneezes with tissues or clothing, and wash your hands afterwards.
  • Seek Medical Attention: If you feel unwell during or after travel, consult a healthcare provider and share your travel history.
  • Get Vaccinated: Ensure you are up-to-date on vaccines, including the pneumococcal vaccine and seasonal flu shots, to protect against respiratory infections that can lead to pneumonia.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to keep your respiratory system healthy and support your immune system.
  • Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption to strengthen your immune system.

What are the treatments for Pneumonia?

A study published on PubMed, claims the treatment for pneumonia is based on its type, severity, and the patient’s overall health. Some of them are mentioned below.

  • Most cases can be managed outside of the hospital. First-line treatment for previously healthy patients is a macrolide antibiotic.
  • For patients with comorbidities, a respiratory fluoroquinolone or a beta-lactam plus a macrolide is recommended.
  • Regardless of the type, patients should focus on rest, and increased fluid intake.
  • Antibiotic therapy should last a minimum of 5 days, with longer courses (7 to 10 days) for severe infections or those with extrapulmonary manifestations.
  • Antiviral medications can be prescribed for specific viruses for the infected individuals.
  • In severe cases, hospitalisation may be necessary, where treatments can include oxygen therapy and possibly intravenous antibiotics.

The strategies emphasise the importance of tailoring therapy based on individual patient factors and local antibiotic resistance patterns. After successful treatment, follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor recovery.
